History
Casa Pizarro hotel is a historic building dating from the 18th century in the old city of Caceres. It was purchased and restored in 1798 by Don José García Carrasco, who later served as the Mayor of the city in 1820.
In Extremadura, Don José embodies the prototype of a bourgeois whose fortune comes from the combination of commercial and credit activities with the exploitation of the agricultural resources available in the region at the end of the Old Regime.
The building was the headquarters of the most renowned banking and wool trading house in Extremadura in the 19th century: Casa García Carrasco was where a significant part of Extremaduran life revolved in the first half of the 19th century. The main activity was the buying and selling of merino sheep wool.
Before the end of the 18th century, in 1799, Don Juan José García Carrasco was born in the Casa. He later became the first Count of Santa Olalla and, in 1841, the Secretary of the Senate. In 1843, he was appointed Minister of Finance. The new Minister founded the Banco de Isabel II in 1844. This significant institution later become the precursor of the current Bank of Spain.
The house belonged to different branches of the family and underwent various vicissitudes and reforms over the years.
The Pulido López-Hidalgo family operated the house under the name Hotel Albarragena until the spring of 2022 when Grupo Zaguán embarked on an ambitious renovation project to once again enhance the value of the house…
Present and future
After 15 months of meticulous restoration, Casa Pizarro Hotel opened its doors in September 2023. The name refers to the street where the house is located, in honor of the renowned Extremaduran conqueror, Don Francisco Pizarro.
The project involved a comprehensive renovation of the former Hotel Albarragena, transforming it into a charming 4 stars boutique hotel with 21 rooms. This renovation aimed to enhance the comfort and decoration of all the rooms, improve energy efficiency, and provide better accessibility.
